Arcadia Vocal Worx Outline

Arcadia Academy of Music’s Vocalworx Program is a show choir performance initiative that aims to bring together the up and coming singers of our franchise locations. This will encourage interaction with their musical peers, and challenge them in an engaging and exciting environment.

The program will run throughout the year, depending on interest as well as for specific times such as Musicfest or holiday concerts. Each program will last for 14 weeks, with vocalists meeting once a week for one and a half hours.

If needed, students will be put through an audition process, so that they can be grouped with students of the same skill level. Once they are placed, they will be matched with a vocal instructor who has experience directing and teaching voice in a group based setting.

Program Curriculum:

Vocalworx groups are required to work on O’ Canada, as well as two songs of the instructor’s choosing. The instructor song choices should be chosen by the fifth week at the latest. Stylistically contrasting songs are highly recommended, and use of movement and show choir techniques will also be taught. While students may request to learn a specific routine, it is up to the instructor to gauge the skill level of the group after learning O’Canada.

Goals:

Learning how to sing in a group is an important part of any singer’s career. It gives them a sense of belonging, and gives them a feeling of a musical community not otherwise present when singing alone. It provides an atmosphere of camaraderie as well socialiability where singers young or old can grow from. It will push vocalists to learn in a group, as well as teach valuable skills such as mentorship, and achieving a common goal amongst peers.

In more technical terms, the Vocalworx program will also give an opportunity for vocalists to improve their critical musical listening, as they must listen to how their voice blends with the singers next to them. It will also teach them the ability to analyze their voice feels within a group, and how to incorporate movement and singing as a coordinated performance.

It will teach vocalists how to network, both interpersonally with other musicians their age. It will also incorporate modern social media techniques to develop brand not only for their own image, but the groups’ image as well. It will also provide a safer avenue for younger vocalists to reduce their performance anxiety, and ‘stage fright’ by singing with a group. This confidence can be translated for them to transition to other programs Arcadia Academy of Music has to offer such as the band program.
